Two of my favorite restaurant guys in Atlanta are brothers, Dan and Ryan Pernice.  These are two young dudes who turned heads a few years ago when they opened two hit concepts on Canton Street in downtown historic Roswell; Table and Main, a folksy but upscale southern food venture and then Osteria Mattone, a cozy, romantic Roman-style Italian eatery a few blocks away. The Pernice brothers and their company, RO Hospitality, have achieved success by a pretty simple formula:  delivering really great quality food, at OTP prices and in an environment that feels just right for the neighborhood.

Now they are back with their third effort, Coalition Food and Beverage, a handsome spot that’s a fresh take on 1950’s diner vittles located just off the downtown Alpharetta square at the base of a new high-end mixed-use development.

Walk into Coalition where you are greeted by two large photographs of 1980’s era “boom boxes,” which surely look like alien space ships to the millennial diners.  To the rest of us it sets the tone for a laid-back, familiar energy that comes across in the restaurant’s atmosphere, food and drinks.  Chef Woolery Back (formerly of Craft, Restaurant Eugene and Holeman and Finch) is redefining 1950’s diner food, with a hand-cranked food fire contraption and a lot of great comfort food choices.  House-made pretzels, St. Louis Style BBQ ribs, crispy crab cakes, classic club sandwiches on Alon’s bread and blackened tuna burgers are cheffed-up, yet approachable and are skillfully prepared.  Brother Dan oversees the beverage program which features 8 draft beers, a bunch of those hipster craft canned beers, wine and spirits.  For Sunday brunch his Bloody Mary is quite a masterpiece.

Places like downtown Alpharetta, Woodstock and Duluth have become utopian bases in Atlanta’s unyielding sprawl and it’s places like Coalition Food and Beverage that really make them work.  Unique, well-executed restaurants most of us would kill be a “regular” at that are walkable or just down the road.   Coalition is just one more reason you don’t need to come into the wicked city anymore.
